Moses, der Prophet, Führer und Gesetzgeber des israelitischen Volkes, Sohn des Amram und der Jochebeth, wurde vor 3000 Jahren in Aegypten, wo sein Volk unter dem Drucke der Könige schmachtete, geb. Dem grausamen Befehle Pharao's, wornach jeder neugeborene israel. Knabe nach der Geburt getödtet werden sollte, entging er durch die zärtliche Sorgfalt der Mutter. Sie übergab das Kind in einem wohlverwahrten Kästchen den Fluten des Nils. Seine ältere Schwester Mirjam (s. d.), lustwandelnd mit der Königstochter, machte diese auf das schwimmende Kästchen aufmerksam; M.wurde gerettet und seiner eigenen Mutter, durch Mirjam's Vermittelung, zur Pflege übergeben. Er erhielt am Hofe eine Bildung, die ihn vor allen seines Volkes auszeichnete und befähigte, der Retter und Reformator desselben zu werden. Dazu ward ihm auf wunderbare Weise der Befehl des Himmels. Wie er seine Sendung durch Gottes Beistande und mit Hilfe seines Bruders vollbrachte, erzählt die heilige Geschichte. Der Erfolg und die Kraft, mit welcher er die göttl. Offenbarungen zum mosaischen Glauben ausbildete, weist ihm eine Stelle unter den gefeiertsten Männern des Alterthums an. Vor Allem verdient hier berücksichtigt zu werden, daß er das alte patriarchalische Verhältniß der Frauen wieder herzustellen suchte. Während in dem hochgebildeten Griechenland die Frauen in der Regel nicht mehr als Sclavinnen waren, nahmen sie bei den Israeliten eine durch bürgerliche und religiöse Gesetze gesicherte ehrenvolle Stelle ein. Die Gattin war treue Begleiterin und Freundin des Mannes auf dem Lebenswege, und darum zählte Israel so viele berühmte Frauen. Seine Religion begeisterte sie sogar zu Thaten des Heldenthumes, wie z. B. Deborah (s. d.). Auch Moses kam, wie das ganze Volk, nicht in das gelobte Land. Die Urkunden, welche seinen Namen tragen, erzählen, er sei auf einem Berge, von wo er das ganze heil. Land vor sich sah, gestorben, und Niemand habe sein Grab erfahren.
